As the vaccine roll-out continues, we can look forward to a recovery for the industry gathering pace from the summer onwards. And, a golden opportunity to build back better European aviation by urgently tackling existing problems.
So it's great to see that ENAIRE will invest 127 million euros in 2021 to transform itself technologically. The 127 million euro investment will focus on digitising air navigation and control systems and restructuring the airspace and new operational concepts for the purpose of building the Single European Sky. This is a great sign of a journey toward transformation, as well as helping the aviation sector recover.
We also noticed the promising news story that based on HungaroControl’s concept, one of the largest free route airspaces in Europe is expanding. After Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania, Slovakia have also just joined the South East Europe Free Route Airspace based on a HungaroControl’s operating concept. Free-route airspace could potentially save millions of flight miles annually in South-Eastern Europe alone, resulting in tens of thousands of tonnes less fuel consumed and proportional emissions reductions. We do love collaboration!
Another story that caught our eye this week is that SESAR will launch ALBATROSS, the most energy-efficient flying bird. It's an initiative of major European aviation stakeholders to demonstrate how the technical and operational innovations delivered by SESAR can further reduce the environmental footprint of aviation towards a more sustainable mode of transportation.
If the industry is really going to come back fighting this year, we must start tackling core issues such as the way the aviation system is financed, regulated and integrated, and how it addresses sustainability - we feel these stories demonstrate real promise and hope for the future!
